Cass Park Library
Project Statement
This library project combines ideas from multiple architectural precedents to create a unique design language. Inspired by the Aminu Media Library, the project uses curvilinear forms to carve and shape space, avoiding rigid geometry. Material studies of the GIG House informed an exploration of brick construction, which evolved into a focus on Catalan vaulting after researching projects such as the Maya Somaiya Library, the work of the Block Research Group, and Eladio Dieste. The result is a brick-vaulted library located in Cass Park, where exterior brick buttresses support the structure while a reinforced concrete shell strengthens the roof. Large expanses of glazing promote transparency, daylight, and a strong visual connection between the interior and the surrounding park. The flowing curves create open, flexible spaces, with enclosed program areas tucked along the building's edges. The expressive vaulted ceiling celebrates the structural geometry, showcasing the craftsmanship of the brick construction while creating an inviting and memorable civic space.
